SOFT ROBOTICS

Tutor: Frank Melendez, Assistant Professor SSA CCNY

Work by students:
(curling soft robots): Diaa Aziz, Dominka Krupa

The field of robotics is becoming increasingly pervasive in our lives. For over a decade, the use of robotics in architectural design has focused on the use of industrial robots, primarily for fabrication purposes. Industrial robots are made of metal, they are heavy, and are generally considered dangerous to humans within a close proximity. These series of courses introduce students to the emerging field of soft robotics, robotic systems that are made of soft materials, and soft actuation, air. This course explores ways of how Soft robotics can offer new alternatives for human-machine interactions and corporeal architectures that promote touch.
