follow us @bitsandclay

bit and clay LCC is a startup company that combines traditional and contemporary methods of crafting ceramic products. This is achieved by merging computing, 3D printing, and hand finishing techniques that reflect qualities of analog and digital fabrication. Each design is generated using algorithms, allowing for a visual expression of complex numerical data through geometry. Emergent forms and patterns are explored as an experimental reciprocity between machine and material, conflating the precision of 3D printing and the unruly quality of clay. Each piece is fired and finished with glazes to further convey surface qualities and textures through color and reflectivity.

true/false’ series

The ‘true/false’ series is a product from bits and clay LLC and it explores how clay 3D printers can be used, not only to fabricate precise complex curved forms, but also to design complex surface textures and patterns. By calibrating the alignment and misalignment of the layers (toolpaths), the pliability and plasticity of the extruded clay material, can be expressed. This combination of precision/imprecision and alignment/misalignment, results in surface continuities that gradually transition from striated to bumpy textures. This opens up endless possibilities and combinations for the design of various surface textures and patterns within a complex form.
