At the Masters in Biodesign at Central Saint Martins we explore bio-informed design strategies as a driver for sustainable innovation. The work we develop aims at incorporating the inherent life-conducive principles of biological living systems into the design process to develop alternative and regenerative design propositions for a sustainable future. Students design through setting up lab protocols to document and perform scientific experimental procedures with different living organisms like bacteria, mycelium, slime mold, or algae amongst others seting up hybrid design frameworks by analysing, quantifying data and distilling many complex ecological and environmental processes and understanding and developing its interconnectivity with systems thinking design strategies. Students develop personal ethical standings towards biodesign agendas, to whole system thinking, planetary boundaries and biomimicry principles, biological systems, computational design and biofabrication techniques. Students apply these principles to design new sustainable materials, products, services, systems or architectural propositions.
